National Tour Guide Training Programme QQI Level 6 Special Purpose Award

Course Outline

The National Tour Guide Training programme at Dublinia will provide participants with the skills, knowledge and competencies to deliver and manage a comprehensive tour management and guiding service for tourists visiting and travelling in Ireland. The programme is relevant, practical and responsive to industry needs.

There are three modules: Irish Tour Guiding, Irish Natural Heritage & Culture and National Tour Management. Each module carries 15 credits. Successful graduates will receive the QQI Level 6 Special Purpose Award in National Tour Guiding (6S20232) and will automatically qualify for the Failte Ireland National Tour Guide Badge.


Course Aims

  • To train and prepare learners to work as a tour guide in the heritage tourism sector at a national level.
  • To equip the learners with the skills needed for group management including health and safety environmental best practices and customer care.
  • To equip the learners with the professional, technical, social, personal and administrative skills to prepare and offer a quality guided service to a range of market profiles.
  • To ensure learner’s understanding and knowledge of tourism and heritage industry best practice.
  • To equip learners with the professional awareness to evaluate and respond to the range of issues ongoing in the industry e.g. main bodies, legislation, sustainability, development and protection of heritage.
  • To develop skills in research (online and other serviced sources,) interpretation and delivery of information on Irish Heritage and Culture and develop an understanding and appreciation of Ireland’s Culture and Heritage in a National and International context.
  • To interpret and understand key aspects of Ireland’s history, archaeology and heritage.
  • To enhance and support learner opportunities for employment and further education and to facilitate learner progression, personal development and enhancement of learning skills.

Course Duration: Programme duration is 12 weeks in total – comprising 8 weeks of intensive directed and self-directed training (9.00 am – 5.00 pm) followed by 4 weeks of practical and self-directed learning to complete written and practical assignments and assessments.

Entry Requirements

  • Hold Leaving Certificate or QQI Level 5 award or equivalent qualification
  • Be 18 years or over (proof of ID required)
  • As the programme is delivered in English, in the event a Learner has English as their second language, a B2 level of proficiency in the English language is required.
  • Recognised English tests – (Certificate to be provided) Cambridge English: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/ IELTS – Home of the IELTS English Language test: https://www.ielts.org/
  • Ideally, have previous relevant experience in the tourism sector
  • Have an ability and experience of speaking in front of a group of people
  • Have Internet access, a basic level of computer literacy, and use of mobile apps
  • A knowledge of orientation and map skills is desirable but not essential
  • Ideally, have a second Language (advantageous but not essential)
  • Successfully complete the interview process
